Renting Land for Tobacco Production OMAFRA has a series of FactSheets with information on leasing cropland. These can be found on the Agricultural Business Management/financial management section of the OMAFRA website (http://www.omafra.gov.on.ca/english/busdev/finance.html). When renting land for the purpose of producing a tobacco crop, there are several things to consider. The first and most important, is to establish what chemicals have been applied to the crops previously grown on the land, and at what rates they were applied. Some chemicals degrade slowly in the soil, and residue carryover from the previous years’ applications could be detrimental to the growth of the tobacco crop. For example, tobacco plants are sensitive to atrazine and dicamba, active ingredients present in a wide variety of herbicides. Growers should also inquire which crops were grown on the land, as some previous crops may be hosts for diseases and pests that could affect the current tobacco crop. For example, tomatoes are good hosts for tobacco mosaic virus (TMV), and planting tobacco into a field that contained a TMV infected tomato crop will likely result in infection of the tobacco plants.
